How We Calculate Dog Years
The Puppy Years method
Puppy Years uses a clear, easy-to-understand age estimate. The first year counts as about 15 human years, the second year brings the estimate to about 24, and later years depend on size group.
The result is designed for friendly education and fun birthday planning. It is not a medical diagnosis.
Human age estimate
For dogs age two and older, Puppy Years starts at 24 human years and adds 4 years per dog year for small dogs, 5 for medium dogs, 6 for large dogs, and 7 for giant dogs.
For puppies under one year, the calculator uses a month-aware estimate so the result feels more useful.
Life stage estimate
Puppy Years uses the breed lifespan midpoint to estimate when the senior stage begins. The senior stage begins around the final quarter of the estimated lifespan.
A dog who passes the upper end of the average lifespan range may be shown as super senior.
Birthday facts
Birthday facts come from the birthday month, day, and weekday. The calculator can show zodiac sign, birthstone, birth flower, half birthday, and next birthday countdown.
